Around 11 November, Utrecht celebrates the annual St. Martin's festival, dedicated to the city's patron saint, St. Martin of Tours. According to the legend, St. Martin gave half of his cloak to a beggar, who represented a manifestation of Jesus. Utrecht and St. Martin have been connected for hundreds of years, and he can be found all over the city: in churches, statues, stained-glass windows and plaques.

St. Martin's festival is a major event in Utrecht. In early November, the city becomes a stage for countless activities and celebrations, culminating in the St. Martin's Parade: a unique parade full of home-made lanterns, music and light sculptures winding their way through the historic town centre – and everybody can join in.
