Every year in September, Utrecht is dedicated to the Netherlands Film Festival, when the city becomes the Dutch film capital for ten days and gives Dutch cinema the recognition it deserves. Utrecht's cinemas show short and feature-length films, both analogue and digital, from arthouse to mainstream, and showcasing all aspects of the Dutch film industry. In addition to showing feature films, documentaries, animations and television dramas, the festival also offers a range of events for young & old. The highlight of the festival is unquestionably the annual presentation of the ‘Golden Calves’, or the Dutch Film Industry Awards.

It is not uncommon to bump into a famous actor or actress in town during the festival – many Dutch cinema professionals are simply walking about at NFF, while visitors can take advantage of a varied programme. The many talk shows, premieres, workshops, debates, parties – and of course, film screenings – are what make the NFF a lively, informative, inspiring and creative festival.
