King Willem-Alexander's birthday is on 27 April, which we in Utrecht cannot allow to pass unnoticed. The entire country goes all-out, putting on a huge range of events. Town squares are magically transformed into enormous dance floors, second-hand treasures abound in the vrijmarkt jumble sales, and everybody proudly wears orange for a day. The king himself ventures inland on King's Day, taking part in all kinds of activities with his family and enjoying a special programme of music.
Utrecht is also decked in orange on King's Day. The festivities start on King's Day Eve,the night before the king's birthday. The legendary vrijmarkt (free-market) jumble sales kick off at 18:00, where for 24 hours local residents sell second-hand items and home-made treats, music resounds from every street corner, and traditional Dutch fair games can be enjoyed like days of old. Town squares are taken over by bands and DJs, so you can dance the night and day away.
Important: King's Day is always celebrated on 27 April, except when it falls on a Sunday, when it is celebrated the day before (Saturday 26 April).
