On 5 May, the whole of the Netherlands celebrates the end of the German occupation in 1945. It is not only a day of celebrations, however: the day is also a meditation on the value of freedom and peace. There are fewer and fewer people in the Netherlands with a conscious memory of wartime, which is why it is so important to continue working on our collective memory, and to realise that freedom should by no means be taken for granted.
On this national day of celebrations, every city puts together its own programme of festivities, musical performances and lively street fairs. Utrecht holds a large Liberation Day Festival in Park Transwijk, which always promises a varied music programme featuring Dutch and international artists, fascinating freedom talks and special activities for children.
