Go back in time in the Dutch Railway Museum. From steam locomotives to modern day trains.
Stand eye-to-eye with giant steam locomotives, wander through an old miners’ village, or step into the luxurious world of the Orient Express. Whatever you experience, you are not the first; in former days, things used to be as they are depicted in the Spoorwegmuseum.
The Spoorwegmuseum is a fascinating environment where visitors discover what developments in the area of railways have meant for the world. There is a real historic train station from 1874, a theatre, an audio tour and an exciting train attraction.
The museum has 4 worlds:
World 1: De Grote Ontdekking (The Great Discovery)
Your journey through time starts in The Great Discovery. It is the year 1839 and you stroll among the houses of an old English miners’ village. It feels as if you could run into John Middlemis any minute; the engine driver of the very first steam locomotive who takes you to the first days of trains.
World 2: Droomreizen (Dream Journeys)
Once you arrive at the platform of the Orient Express, you are certain to be curious. What was it like to make Dream Journeys to the Far East? A new world will open up for you in the theatre…
World 3: Steel Monsters
You are probably very curious about the people who worked at the railroads and want to see the mighty locomotives came by steaming and hissing. Grandfather Gommers tells all about this in Steel Monsters, so be sure to partake in this attraction and make a breathtaking journey through life in those days.
World 4: De Werkplaats (The Workshop)
View old locomotives, carriages and coaches in The Workshop that tell the story of centuries of history. EduTRAINers provide personal information and explanations to bring the fascinating history to life.
The museum is even more fun for children, who are allowed on and in the trains, a children’s train takes rides across the museum premises and there are rafts to cross the water. The theatre also has wonderful exhibitions suitable for both adults and children.
Heimwee express (Nostalgia express)
Are you filled with nostalgia for the days of times gone by? Every last weekend of the month, the Nostalgia express makes a nostalgic trip. Some historic trains such as De Blokkendoos, De Hondenkop and the Blauwe Engel are ready at the Maliebaan station for a ride that goes far beyond the museum…
The museum entrance is at the Maliebaan station which dates from 1874, where the train left for Amsterdam. The impressive building was recently renovated and the grandeur of those days can certainly be experienced again. Your journey through the worlds of the railway starts at the Maliebaan station. Come by and experience the world of the Spoorwegmuseum!
